Cream sugar and shortening; add vanilla and salt.
Add egg whites one at a time, mixing well after each one.
Add 2 tbsp flour, 3/4 cup buttermilk with soda in it.
Add remaining flour and buttermilk alternately.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.
Let cake cool
Make icing-
Melt butter; add sugar and milk. Let dissolve. Add powdered sugar; mix until smooth.
Put on cooled cake.
