Ingredients
½ c. butter
½ c. sugar
1 egg
1 c. molasses
2 ½ c. flour
1 ½ tsp. soda
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1tsp. ground cloves
 
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. pepper
1 c. hot water

Instructions
Cream butter and sugar. Add egg and molasses. Combine dry ingredients and add to cream mixture alternating with hot water, beginning and ending with flour. Pour into greased 9” square pan. Bake at 350 degrees 35-40 min. or until springs back when touched. Serve with lemon glaze.
Lemon sauce- mix 2 eggs with 1/2 cup sugar until fluffy, gradually beat in 3/4 tsp. grated lemon peel and 1/4 c. fresh lemon juice. Cook over double boiler until thickened.
