Beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 1/2 cup of the sugar, beating until soft peaks form; set aside.
Beat shortening and remaining 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in flour mixture alternately with milk until well blended and smooth. Mix in vanilla. With electric mixer on low speed, fold in egg whites. (Or fold in by hand.) Pour into greased and floured 9x13-inch pan. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans. Cool completely on wire racks.
