     Grandma Morgan's Christmas Cookies

4 cups flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup butter (2 sticks)
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
2 tb. milk
1-2 egg whites, beaten

Sift together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt and set aside. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla. Gradually add the dry ingredients 1/3 at a time, alternating with the milk and mix until well combined. Flatten the dough, wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Overnight is even better.
Preheat over to 375. Take 1/4 of the dough out of the refrigerator and roll out to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut with your favorite cookie cutters and place on ungreased cooking sheet about 1/2 inch apart. Brush with beaten egg whites and decorate with sprinkles if desired. Be careful to not let the egg white drip from the cookies to the pan or during baking - it will act like glue, making it much harder to remove the cookies from the pan. Bake at 375 for about 10 minutes. The cookies should be slightly brown around the edges. Remove from the pan promptly and let cool. Repeat with the remaining dough.
