Sift together dry ingredients. Cut chocolate into fine pieces in mixing bowl Pour on boiling water. Let stand until soft; blend. Add shortening and vanilla; beat until smooth.

Add all but 1/4 cup buttermilk to dry ingredients. Blend at low speed; then beat for 2 minutes with mixer. Add eggs and remaining buttermilk; blend together. Beat 2 minutes more. Fold in nuts.

Pour into greased and flowered 3 quart ring mold. I use large (cake) oblong pan. Bake in moderate over; 350 for 35 to 40 minutes, or until cake test done.

Cool for 5 minutes; turn over on cooling rack.
