Preheat oven to 375. Sift flour, salt and baking powder. Work shortening with spoon until creamy. Add white sugar slowly; cream until light. Add eggs, vanilla then flour mixture. Mix well.
Spread in greased pan. Beat egg white until stiff; add brown sugar. Beat until stiff. Fold in nuts. Spread on mixture in pan. Bake for 25 minutes.
Cut into 2 inch squares while warm.
