Cream butter and sugar, add eggs one at a time. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk. In large bowl mix flour, dates, candy and nuts. Stir to coat. Add flour mixture and coconut with milk to creamed mixture. Batter will be stiff. Bake in greased and floured 9x13 pan in 250 degree oven for 2 ½ to 3 hours or until pick inserted in center comes out clean. Combine orange juice and powdered sugar and pour over cake while hot. Store in covered container. This cake is similar to fruitcake and has become a family favorite.
