1 1/2 cusp shortening or butter, I use 1/2 cup unsalted butter and 1 cup lard
3 beaton eggs
1 cup sour milk
1 rounded tsp baking soda
Instructions
The original recipe reads as follows-
6 cups unsifted flour, 2 heaping tsp baking powder, 1 tsp nuteg or vanilla, pinch salt, 2 1/2 cups sugar, 1 1/2 cups shortening. Mix the above as for pie dough. Add to this 3 beaten eggs, 1 cups sour milk, 1 rounding tsp soda. Stir as little as possible. Roll 1/4 inch thick. Bake in moderatte oven.
Start with 4 cups flour, (you will keep adding flour when rolling dough) mix the baking powder, salt, sugar, cut shortening in with dough cutter mix as you would pie dough. Don't over mix,
Add vanilla, sour milk, and beaten eggs (make your sour milk by adding 1 tsp vingar to the milk) and baking soda.
Again mix until blended, you do not want to over work dough.
Dough will be sticky at this point. Chill dough at this point for at least an hour to roll easier.
Adding more flour roll so dough is not stick. roll out 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. cut with cookie cutters. Place on ungreased or use parchment on cookie sheets. Bake at 350 8 to 12 min These will not usually turn brown, so about 10 min . then ice with your favorite icing
