     Apple Dumplings

Ingredients
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. water
1/4 teas. cinnamon
1/4 teas. nutmeg
6 to 10 drops red food coloring
3 tbs. butter
2 c. flour
2 teas. baking powder
1 teas. salt
 
2/3 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
6 med apples, pared and cored

Instructions
Combine sugar, water, spices and food coloring and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add butter. Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening, Add milk and stir until flour is moistened.
On floured surface roll 12 by 18 rectangle 1/8 to 1/4 thick. Cut into 6 inch squares. Put apple on square. Sprinkle each apple with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Dot with butter.
Moisten edges of squares. Fold corners to center and pinch edges together.
Place 1 inch apart in ungreased pan. Pour syrup over dumplings. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake uncovered at 375 for 35 minutes.
