cream butter with brown sugar, add flour and salt . press half of the mix into an 8x8 greased cake pan.

mix water, molasses and soda, pour over above mixture. sprinkle remaining flour mixture over top.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees in a greased 8x8 cake pan.

serve with LEMON SAUCE -
MIX 1/2 CUP SUGAR, 2 TABLESPOONS CORNSTARCH AND 1 CUP WATER IN SAUCEPAN. COOK OVER MEDIUM HEAT UNTIL THICK AND BUBBLY. BOIL 1 MINUTE, STIR IN 1 TABLESPOON LEMON JUICE AND 1 TABLESPOON LEMON ZEST AND 2 TABLESPOONS BUTTER.
