     Date & Nut bread

Category   Desserts - Breads
Sub Category   None

Ingredients
1 pkg Dromedary dates
1 1/2 c. boiling water
2 Tbs. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt.
1 well-beaten egg
2 3/4 cups pastry flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar

1 cup chopped walnuts
1 tsp. vanilla

Instructions
Cut Dates into small pieces and add to large mixing bowl. Pour boiling water over them. Add shortening, sugar and salt and let stand until cool.
Add egg and mix. Sift flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar together. Add dry mix to the bowl slowly, mixing thoroughly.
Grease and flour a loaf pan. Turn dough into the pan. Bake in a moderate over, or at 350 degrees for 1 1/4 hours. Recipe can be doubled.
HINT- To make up fancy little loaves, save up soup cans, remove labels, and wash thoroughly. Spray and flour the inside of each can. Fill to about 2/3rds up and bake. Check for done-ness after about 45 minutes by inserting a toothpick into the center. Adjust baking time accordingly. Cool completely on baking rack. To remove from can, open bottom with can opener and gently push the nut bread out. Slice and serve with cream cheese.
