Cream butter and sugar; add egg and vanilla. Mix well. Add cream of tartar, soda & salt; mix well. Add flour; chill. Make into walnut sized balls 7 place on cookie sheet. Press down with glass dipped in sugar. Put half a maraschino cherry in middle of each cookie.
