     Frosted Chocolate-Cherry Cookies

1 1/2 cups butter or margarine, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup cocoa
1 (10-ounce) jar maraschino cherries
Chocolate-Cherry Frosting

Cream butter in mixing bowl; gradually add sugar, beating at medium speed of an electric mixer. Add eggs and vanilla, beating well.
Combine flour and next 4 ingredients; add to mixture and mix well.
Shape dough into 1-inch balls; place about 2 inches apart on ungresed cookie sheets. Press thumb in center of cookie leaving an indentation. Drain cherries, reserving juice. cut cherries in half, and place, cut side down, in indentation of cookie. Bake at 350 for 8 minutes. Cool; drizzle with Chocolate-Cherry Frosting.
Chocolate-Cherry Frosting- 1 (1-ounce) square unsweetened chocolate 1 tables butter or margarine 1 cup sifted powdered sugar 5 to 6 tablespoons cherry juice Combine chocolate and butter in a heavy saucepan; cook over low heat, stirring constantly until chocolate melts. Remove from heat. Add powered sugar and half of cherry juice; beat until smooth. Add juice to desired consistency; stir well. Yield 3/4 cup. NOTE- Cookies may be frozen up to 1 week. Place in single layers in zip top plastic bags.
