Melt 1/2 c. white sugar and heat until browned and caramelized.
Add 1/2 c. water. Boil until it makes a syrup. Cool.
In large electric mixer bowl, cream 1 1/2 c. sugar and margarine.
Add beaten egg yolks, water, and 2 cups of flour. Beat for 5 minutes.
Add burnt sugar, vanilla, and baking powder and remaining
1/2 c. flour. Beat well. In another bowl beat egg whites until stiff
but not dry. Fold in burnt sugar batter. Turn into two greased
8 or 9 inch pans or one 10 inch tube pan. Bake in 350 degrees oven
until cake tests done about 25 minutes for layers and 35 to 50 minutes
for tube pan. Iced as desired.
