Preheat oven to 375°F. In large bowl, mix butter, shortening, powdered sugar, egg and extracts. In a medium bowl, mix flour and salt. Gradually blend flour mixture into the mixture in the large bowl.
Divide dough in half. Put red color in one half of the dough. Take 1 tsp. of red dough and 1 tsp. of white dough and roll back and forth on a floured surface to form into ropes (about 4 inched long). Place one red and one white rope side by side. Press them together and twist. Bend one end to create a candy cane shape.
Place on an un-greased baking sheet and bake 9 min. or until light brown.
Mix crushed peppermint candy and sugar. Sprinkle on cookies immediately after removing them from the oven. Remove cookies from the baking sheet to cool.
(Tip- To crush candy canes, unwrap them and put them in a freezer zip-lock bag. Bang them with a rolling pin or the handle of a screwdriver.)
