wisk yolks with 1/4 cup sugar till thick and pale yellow
heat milk and half n half with rest of the 1/2 cup sugar
till steam rises then temper yolks into the hot milk
return to stove 5 to 8 minutes
stir constantly
strain the base thru cheese cloth
cool in ice bath
cover and chll for at least 4 hours or over night
put in ice cream machine
