Heat oil in a heavy, medium saucepan until very hot. Carefully pour popcorn kernels into hot oil, and then sprinkle with sugar. Cover with a lid and shake pan slightly, popping corn 1-2 minutes. Continue shaking pan, being careful not to heat too long as sugar will caramelize and or popcorn will burn. When popping slows down, remove pan from heat and pour popcorn into a large bowl. Sprinkle with salt, to taste. Stir several times while popcorn is cooling to keep it from sticking together.
