Sift flour, measure and sift with salt, soda, and cream of tartar.
Cream shortening with sugar and egg yolks. Beat til light. Add milk
and vanilla. Combine two mixtures, mixing till smooth. With as
little handling as possible, roll out on floured board to 1/2 in
thick. after cutting, let stand 20 min. heat fat till it will brown a
cube of bread in 60 sec. add a few doughnuts at a time, turning
when first crack appears. turn again when brown. cool. shake in
sugar.
