Preheat oven to 375 degF. Mix butter, sugar, egg, and flavorings. Mix flour and salt. Stir flour mixture into butter mixture. Divide dough in half. Blend red food coloring into half of the dough. Chill dough overnight.
Roll one teaspoon of each dough (red and white) on board into flour inch strips. (Hint- lightly sprinkle the board with flour and confectioner's sugar - less sticky and cookies stay softer). Place strips side by side and twist like a rope. Put on ungreased cookie sheet, curve top down for cane. Bake about 9 minutes.
Also can use green food coloring and twist with white dough to make wreaths. Use cinnamon candies for garnish.
Also can brush with egg white and sprinkle with red sugar before baking.
