Prepare jars by washing, then rinse in boiling water. Wash pickles and dry.
Alternate slices of pickles and onions in gallon jar. (Or several smaller jars.
Mix sugar, vinegar, and spices together until sugar is dissolved. DO NOT HEAT! Pour over pickles and onions. Let stand in refrigerator at least 5 days before using.
