In cocktail shaker, using the end of a wooden spoon, mash ginger. Add cherry brandy, lemon juice and simple syrup. Fill halfway with ice, cover and shake vigorously until well chilled. Strain into chilled martini glass.
To make simple syrup, bring 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to a boil. Stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and cool.
