In large saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, butter, water
and salt.
Cook until melted and bubbly around the edge, stirring frequently.
Continue cooking 2 minutes, stirring frequently.
Remove from heat; stir in baking soda and vanilla. Stir until caramel
darkens in color (about 1-2 minutes). Let stand 1 minute; serve over
ice cream.
