Mix together dates, baking soda and water. Set aside until cool.
Cream together shortening and sugar until smooth.
Add eggs one at a time. Cream until well mixed.
Sift together flour and cocoa.
Add 1/2 of the chocolate chips and 1/2 of the nuts to the batter. (The remaining 1/2 will be sprinkled on
top of the batter.)
Pour batter into a greased 9x13 inch cake pan.
Sprinkle remaining chips and nuts on top.
Bake at 350 degrees until done.
