Prick brats with a fork so they won't explode when they cook. Add to a large stockpot. Add onions and butter, and slowly pour beer into the pot. Place the pot over medium heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
Lightly oil grate, and place brats on the grill. cook for 10 to 14 minutes turning to brown evenly. Serve hot off the grill on substantial buns.
