Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 9-by-13-inch pan.
In large bowl of electric mixer, sift together the flour, sugar,
baking powder, soda and salt. Add shortening and 1/3 cup of
the buttermilk. Beat 2 minutes. Add bananas, eggs and
remaining buttermilk. Beat 2 more minutes. Fold in nuts. Spread
in prepared pan and bake 45-55 minutes.
For Frosting- Place brown sugar, shortening, butter and salt in
saucepan. Place over medium heat, stirring constantly, until
mixture starts to boil. Add milk and cook 3 minutes, watching
closely to prevent burning.
Remove from heat and cool slightly. Add confectioners' sugar and
beat until icing begins to thicken and is the correct consistency to
spread. If too stiff, add a little whipping cream.
