Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add egs and vanilla extract, and mix well. In another bowl sift flour, salt, and backing powder together. alternate between milk and dry ingredients, blend into butter mixture
Wrap and refrigerate until chilled, about 4 hours. On lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut using variously shaped cookie cutters
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. cookies will be pale. when cool ice with royal icing.
