Combine sugar, water, spices and food coloring and bring to a boil.
Remove from heat and add butter. Sift dry ingredients together.
Cut in shortening, Add milk and stir until flour is moistened.
On floured surface roll 12 by 18 rectangle 1/8 to 1/4 thick. Cut into
6 inch squares. Put apple on square. Sprinkle each apple with
sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Dot with butter.
Moisten edges of squares. Fold corners to center and pinch edges
together.
Place 1 inch apart in ungreased pan. Pour syrup over dumplings.
Sprinkle with sugar. Bake uncovered at 375 for 35 minutes.
